Snow across the Upper Midwest

Snow across the Upper Midwest

Winter weather left a blanket of snow stretching from Missouri north to Canada by early March 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on March 4, 2010. Snow cover appears most uniform over Iowa and surrounding states, where urban areas create occasional patches of gray-beige. Closer to Lake Superior, large swaths of forest interrupt the snow cover, creating a dappled appearance.
