Fires in Northwestern India

Fires in Northwestern India

Agricultural fires burned in northwestern India in late October 2009. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on October 21. Red outlines mark hotspots associated with actively burning fires. Many of the blazes produce small plumes of smoke that blow toward the southeast. The larger image shows a plume of haze, likely a combination of smoke and urban air pollution, hugging the southern face of the Himalaya.
