Made from a combination of visible and infrared light, this image of southern Greece shows the widespread impact that recent devastating fires have had on southern Greece. In this kind of satellite image, vegetation appears bright green and burned areas appear brick red. Numerous large burn scars sprawl along the western part of the Peloponnesus Peninsula. Other parts of the country are dotted with burned areas as well. This image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 29, 2007. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fires are outlined in red.

The large image provided above has a spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the region in additional resolutions and formats, including a photo-like version.
