Fires and Burn Scars Around Ural River

Fires and Burn Scars Around Ural River

Rust-colored burn scars are scattered across the plains of southern Russia and northwestern Kazakhstan in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from September 28, 2005. Actively burning fires detected by MODIS are marked with red outlines. The fires seen here may be a mixture of intentional agricultural fires and accidental or natural fires. The contained, geometric burn scars suggest controlled burning of agricultural plots, while the more irregular burned areas could be from accidental or natural fires.
