Dry-season Fires in Mozambique

This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on September 28, 2005, shows scores of fires (marked in red) in central Mozambique, on the southeastern coast of Africa. Most of the upper left quadrant of the scene shows southern Malawi, including the southern tip of Lake Nyasa. These fires are likely part of the seasonal burning that accompanies local agriculture. Though such fires are not necessarily immediately hazardous, they can have a negative impact on human health and natural resources.
