A large plume of Saharan Desert dust was seen blowing northward across the Strait of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea on October 1, 2003. In this true-color scene, acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite, the tan-colored plume appears to be stretching from the northeastern coast of Algeria to the northwestern coast of Libya in a wide arc around the northern coast of Tunisia.
