For months, fires have been burning across southern Mexico and central America, churning out dense smoke the has spread in all directions: westward over the Pacific Ocean, northward to the U.S. over the Gulf of Mexico, and eastward over the Caribbean Sea toward Cuba. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from May 25, 2003, shows the fires (red dots) still smoking.
