| This Multi-spectral Drought Index image shows contrasting conditions in North America during August of 1993. While the U.S. East Coast was experiencing a severe heat wave and dry weather, the Upper Midwest was receiving record rainfall which resulted in some of the worst flooding of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers ever recorded. The intense green straddling the U.S.-Canadian border along the 49th parallel indicates the increased growth of plants due to the combined effects of a wet fall, heavy winter snow, and continued rain throughout the region in the spring and summer. Meanwhile, the East Coast suffered through a series of heat waves which inhibited vegetation, shown by the reddish brown areas concentrated around the Mid-Atlantic states. | |||||
